(e-mail: [email protected]) ABSTRACT The hydrological model SWAT was applied to two watersheds, the Ouse (North of UK) and the Vantaanjoki (South of Finland). The Ouse watershed is characterised by heavy husbandry and large application of organic nitrogen and phosphorus on pasture. The Vantaanjoki watershed is dominated by forest and barley. The model performance was evaluated comparing the measured and predicted time series for flow, total nitrogen and total phosphorus at the watershed outlets. The model performed well in predicting water and nutrient losses. The model showed a good sensitivity in predicted nutrient losses for both the agricultural and forested catchments. The model was then used to estimate the contribution of agriculture to the total load of measured nutrient at the outlet of the two river basins. It was highlighted that for a same catchment diffuse contribution to total nutrient load can be highly variable both in time and space.

A comparison of catchment water quality models and direct estimation techniques

Information on water quality, in particular on sediment, phosphorus and nitrogen exports from catchments, is required by catchment managers and other stakeholder groups to determine appropriate management options for water quality issues. However intensive spatial and temporal data on concentrations or loads of these nutrients is relatively scarce. Given this constraint, nutrient export models ...

Nitrogen retention in a river system and the effects of river morphology and lakes.

The mean annual transfer (loss and retention) of nitrogen in a river system was estimated using a conceptual approach based on water surface area and runoff. Two different approaches for the calculation of water surface area were applied to determine riverine nitrogen retention in four European catchments, ranging between 860-14,000 km2 in area, and differing considerably in the proportion and ...

Nutrient discharge from small agricultural catchments in Sweden Characterisation and trends

Within the Swedish Monitoring Programme for Agriculture, 27 small agricultural catchments were investigated for between 9 and 14 years (6 years for one catchment), starting in the late 1980s, to determine the impact of agricultural activities on discharge water. The catchments represent major variations in climate, soil types and farming in Sweden and hence long-term average load of total nitro...

Prediction of storm transfers and annual loads with data-based mechanistic models using high-frequency data

Excess nutrients in surface waters, such as phosphorus (P) from agriculture, result in poor water quality, with adverse effects on ecological health and costs for remediation. However, understanding and prediction of P transfers in catchments have been limited by inadequate data and over-parameterised models with high uncertainty. We show that, with high temporal resolution data, we are able to...

Estimating Sediment and Nutrient Loads in Gippsland Lakes Catchments Using E2 Modelling Framework

The deterioration of water quality in Gippsland Lakes, indicated by severe algal blooms, and influenced by the flow of nutrients from the Lakes catchments, has received increasing attention. For priority setting on appropriate management actions, a clear understanding is needed of spatial and temporal dynamics of sediment and nutrient fluxes in the catchments of Gippsland Lakes. A number of stu...
